“One Hundred Summers: A Kiowa Calendar Record"

A special exhibition featuring the art of renowned Kiowa artist Silver Horn. The calendar record illustrates 100 years of Kiowa history through pictorial vignettes marking two seasons each year; one for summer and one for winter. The exhibit will highlight a never-before-exhibited treasure to educate the public about the political, religious, economic and social spheres of Kiowa life in a century of dramatic change and adaptation. The exhibit also demonstrates the importance of conserving invaluable works of ethnographic art and showcases the science behind object conservation in the stewardship of museum collections. This exhibit is made possible by the Kirkpatrick Foundation and the Merkel Family Foundation.

Spirit Red: Visions of Native American Artists from the Rennard

Opening reception is Wednesday, June 3 from 7 to 9 p.m. In the summer of 2007, Dr. Rennard Strickland, an Oklahoma citizen of Osage and Cherokee heritage and a passionate collector of Indian art, announced that he wished to give his remarkable collection of more than 200 works of Native American art to the museum in memory of his mother Adell Tucker Strickland. In conjunction with the Red Earth festival opening, his collection appears in this new exhibition, which includes paintings, baskets, pottery, textiles and sculpture, representing some of the most acclaimed artists of the 20th century to the present. Strickland’s vision and knowledge about Native arts makes this one of the more remarkable contemporary collections to be donated to the museum.

A selection of 47 paintings—many of which have been rarely exhibited outside of Wales—and 11 important works on paper will reveal the cross-currents between artists and movements that propelled nineteenth-century painting from the romantic naturalism of J.M.W. Turner to the post-impressionism of Paul Cézanne. The exhibition includes eight works by Turner, five by Jean-François Millet, three each by Camille Corot and Claude Monet, and two each by Cézanne, Edouard Manet, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. $12 adults, $10 seniors and students, free for children 5 & under and Museum members

This exhibition celebrates the 30th Anniversary of the return of the Museum’s Permanent Collection to Shawnee in 1979 after it was housed in Oklahoma City for several years. The Curatorial staff of the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art have selected unique works of art that have rarely been seen by the public. Approximately 95% of the Museum’s collection is in storage.
