Oklahoma City
On April 22, 1889, an anxious crowd of 10,000 people gathered at the edge of the Unassigned Lands in central Oklahoma. The boom of a cannon at high noon signaled the beginning of the Great Land Run. Now it has come to be known as the "greatest horse race in the world." People from every corner of the world raced on foot, on horseback, in wagons, and even on bicycles to stake their claim to the two million acres that had been opened for settlement. By nightfall, the quiet rolling prairie was transformed into a brand new city that would become Oklahoma's capital and the heart of Frontier Country. A century later, Oklahoma City's pioneer spirit would be revived as Oklahoma City enjoyed a southwestern renaissance as the "newest city in the Old West."
