Not Just a Housewife: The Changing Roles of Women in the West

July 24th, 2009 All Day - January 10th, 2010
Around the late 1800s, tradition held that women were expected to fill two roles, that of housewife and mother. This exhibit explores how some women bucked tradition. As women traveled west, many were resolute not to follow the path expected of them, while others were forced to look for nontraditional lives. Some joined the rush for gold, entered politics or looked to the arts, while others ventured into gambling and prostitution. Such women were either praised or scorned, but without their courage, women of today would face a different reality.

Taught by inspirational Theatre Artists, participants will learn basic theatre skills of observation, concentration and imagination. Theatre classes begin Tuesday, September 29 for ages 5-7 and 8-11 years old and Pre-School Creative Drama for 3-4 year olds. Home School Production class kicks off Monday, September 28. Finally, Young Company for ages 7 and up begins Saturday September 26. (Auditions held on September 5th will be required for young company.)

Fort Reno’s Tombstone Tales

At Fort Reno post cemetery - about a dozen re-enactors portray varied cemetery "residents" and tell their story in about 6 minutes to the rotating groups of guests. Living history camps are around the cemetery. Historic Fort Reno gate is about 4 miles west of El Reno off I-40 EXIT 119; and on Old Route 66 (Business I-40) West of El Reno.

Would you like to go on a journey to study the plant life of the Arbuckle Mountains? Then join Dr. Wayne Elisens, professor of botany and curator of the Robert Bebb Herbarium, and Dr. Phil Gibson, associate professor of evolutionary ecology, as they take you on a fact filled mini-adventure through Oklahoma’s scenic Arbuckle Mountains. Bring a sack lunch, snacks, comfortable shoes and plenty of water for this informative quest. We will travel to the locality in university vans. Advance registration is required and space is limited. This program is for adults only. Cost: members, $55, non-members, $65 9 a.m. to approximately 4:30 p.m.
