Overview

Founded on a site overlooking the North Canadian River bottom lands, Yukon had its beginning with the filing of property deeds by A.N. Spencer in February 1891.

With the railroad, flour mill and grain elevators, stores, schools, churches, and rich farm land, the population grew.  With our growth and that of Oklahoma City, Yukon became a prosperous and delightful place to live.

Located on historic Route 66, and just 15 minutes from downtown Oklahoma City, Yukon is known for its festivals, museums and famous citizens, such as country music star Garth Brooks, western film legend Dale Robertson, and the popular Cross Canadian Ragweed band.

History

Before Yukon was opened to the 1889 land run, it was part of the historical Chisholm cattle trail.  A trail that started in Texas and ended at the Kansas railheads

Seeing the potential of the area, A.N. Spencer, a cattleman and railroad builder from Texas, filed a plat of the area on February 14, 1891 which contained  25 homes, one bank, two real estate offices, two restaurants, a lumber yard, a hardware store, a grocery, a livery stable, two saloons, a blacksmith shop, a printing office, a barber shop and another one about completed. The town voted to incorporate in 1901.

Along with farming, the largest industry was the Yukon Mill and Grain Company that shipped flour and feed throughout the south and overseas.

Yukon’s growth was also supported by a large Czech culture which celebrates their heritage during the annual Czech Festival on the first Saturday in October.
